Blood Gore

Last week I made it out to Reynolds for a short afternoon session. The goal was to start working (again) Matt Fultz’s Blood Gore problem on the Triangle Boulder. After coming agonizingly close a year ago, I had not spent much time on this problem since it broke and became slightly harder. This time I was a little determined as I didn’t have too many other projects out there looming in the back of my mind. After a few goes I stuck “the move” only to find myself back on the pad with parts of the hold laying around me…I broke it again. After a bit of cleaning, though I managed to stick the move again, making the second ascent. The most recent break changed the problem in a couple ways: the hold is now about 3 inches higher, making the first move bigger BUT the hold is now much bigger and more open. Overall I think the problem is a bit easier than it originally was. There is also another change to the problem, when cleaning the broken hold I noticed the large flake flexes quite a bit. The hold will undoubtedly break again sometime soon, likely leaving nothing but a destroyed classic. This brings up a big ethical question…should someone glue it?

Last weekend I made a solo trip out to Reynolds Creek. It was the first real nice day of the year and I was very surprised to not see a single person the whole time I was out there. The goal for the day was to check out some new boulders that I had been eying for a long time, clean them and climb them. It’s amazing that 15 years ago I was bouldering out at Reynolds Creek, by myself, finding, cleaning and climbing new problems and I am still able to do that today. Here is a short vid of a couple problems that I found:

Here are a couple shots from earlier this year. The first is Mike McClure trying the insane shoulder move of Blood Gore (V11) on the Triangle Boulder. The second shot is Tammy Stowe-McClure working out the moves to The 18th Hole on the Caddy Shack Boulder.

3rd Ascent

Ok so last week I promised video of 3rd ascents of both El Matador and Absolution. Amazingly Randy Hill sent both these problems in a day. He had put 2 previous days work into Absolution and sent El Matador in a day. Sick.
